Hair Loss and Vitamin C
Just about everyone has heard of Vitamin C as being effective in preventing colds and flu. Some experts are also advancing some findings that claim overdosing on it can be effective in preventing some types of ailments that include cancer. But has anyone ever heard of it as having any role in preventing hair loss? Vitamin C also figures as a nutrient for promoting healthy teeth and gums as well as skin, scalp and hair growth.
1. Vitamin C Helps
Not much is said of Vitamin C in the same vein as the B vitamins in hair loss prevention and regrowth. But it is a known fact that as an anti-oxidant it is a natural detoxifier that helps to get rid of the toxins found in the skin and organs resulting from the unhealthy foods we eat and the polluted air we breathe. It also helps promote proper blood circulation to the skin and scalp allowing hair follicles to get the nutrients they need to grow healthy hair. In addition, it helps maintain healthy blood capillaries that carry the nutrients to the hair follicles.
2. Vitamin C Sources
It is already common knowledge that vitamin C is abundant in fresh citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges as well as fruity vegetables specially tomatoes, red and green peppers. It is also found in other fruits like bananas, avocados, papaya, honeydew melon, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and pineapple, to mention the more familiar ones. Vegetables like artichokes, beetroot, green leafy vegetables, Brussels sprouts and peas are also sources of vitamin C.
A lot of artificial fruit juices are fortified with it. Even some fruity candies and chewing gums have some vitamin C fortification as well. The recommended daily dose is from 3,000 to 10,000 IU. But since it is water soluble and can flushed out of the body in the form of urine, any overdose does not carry health risks.
