What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances that fight the free radical damage our cells experience when they are exposed byproducts as a result of oxidation. They work to slow down or prevent the damage to our cells and are therefore a very important part of our diet. Some of the most common antioxidants are: vitamin A and carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, flavonoids/polyphenols, lycopene, lutein, and lignan. These antioxidants are found in a variety of foods such as: carrots, squash, nuts, seeds, berries, leafy greens, citrus fruits, peppers, fish, red meat, chicken, soy and red wine.

Free radical damage contributes to conditions such as: heart disease, macular degeneration, cancer, diabetes, and more. Making sure to get plenty of antioxidants in your diet is a good way to help prevent these conditions. That said, however, simply adding antioxidants into your diet will not completely eliminate the risk for developing these health conditions.

What is an Antioxidants Supplement?

Antioxidants supplements are multi-vitamins, though they may be found in other supplements. Many people take an antioxidants supplement without even realizing it. The supplements are natural or synthesized vitamins and nutrients designed to help people make sure they are getting everything they need for their bodies whether they get it from the foods they eat on a regular basis. The supplements are available in variety of capacities and are produced by many different companies. For instance, people can purchase one vitamin, such a vitamin C, or get one vitamin that contains many of them. Supplementation is common, and easy.

Certain antioxidants, such as vitamin C are incredibly easy to get a full day’s supply of through diet, while others, such as lycopene can be bard to get if you don’t like tomatoes. If you have a family history of conditions such as heart disease or diabetes, it is incredibly important to live a healthier lifestyle and possibly include antioxidants supplements to help avoid getting these conditions.

Antioxidants play a role in all the systems of our body. They strengthen our immune system, keep our skin looking youthful and firm, and help reduce the chances of cancer forming. The body also produces a few of its own antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, and catalase. Though these antioxidants are produced by the body they may also be available in supplement form.
